



Important Facts about St. Croix:
- St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands at 28 miles long and 7 miles wide.
- St. Croix lies 18 degrees north latitude and 65 degrees west longitude, close enough to the equator so that twilight comes quickly and usually with a brilliant sunset.
- The USVI is on Atlantic Standard Time which is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time. The USVI does not observe daylight savings time. Eastern Daylight Time catches up during daylight savings time and the USVI and US East Coast are on the same time during this period.
- Temperatures range in the 80's during the day, in the 70's most nights year round, with summer months a little warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity low.
- There is no sales tax in the Virgin Islands.
- Federal and local airport fees are usually written into a ticket, and an 8% government tax is applied to hotel rooms. St. Croix is a duty free island so imported alcohol, some watches. jewelry, and cigarettes tend to be less expensive. There are a couple of incidental taxes such as the V.I. Government's 8% tax on hotel rooms.
- The Virgin Islands are a part of the United States Postal System, with first class and postcard rates the same as on the mainland. There are six post offices serving St. Croix.
- Places to see while on St. Croix:
- Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States.
- Salt River, the place where Columbus first arrived in the Virgin Islands in November 1493.
- Buck Island, covering 850 acres and the only US National Park that is underwater.
- Rainforest, a 15 mile stretch along Mahogany Road filled with beautiful trees, plants and native fruits.
Christiansted:
The largest of two towns, Christiansted was constructed in 1735 and served as the capital of the Danish West Indies from 1755 to 1871. Christiansted has maintained its Dutch architecture, and offers shopping, dining and sightseeing in a setting that blends historical significance with a modern flair. Located on the waterfront, Christiansted can easily be explored by foot.
Frederiksted:
Established in 1752, Frederiksted is the second largest town in St. Croix. Known for its continuous shoreline, Frederiksted today serves as St. Croix's cruise ship dock. Frederiksted is also home to Fort Frederik, a restored 18th century fort where Governor Peter Von Scholten emancipated the slaves in 1848.
